Nigerian Album covers.

For my research I looked into some African album covers. I will mainly be focusing on the Nigerian albums covers. Nigeria music has a huge impact on pop culture around the world. There is some interesting about their album covers. They are sometimes minimalist with bold colors or screaming right at you. The website that I looked into for this research was Album Cover Bank traces over 70 years of Nigeria’s album design and visual culture by Yaya Azariah Clarke. The website talks about the history of Nigerian's graphic design over 70 years. It's interesting how they play around with color in the images. The busyness of the images. For example, Lemi Ghariokwu: Zombie (Copyright © Lemi Gariokwu, 1976)

The first thing I saw was man in pink then the colorful font, lastly the background. It was quite hard to identify exactly what was used for the image. I thought maybe it were toy soldiers, and they zoomed in on their faces, hats and hands. I think it's interesting how busy the image is, how it keeps you wondering what exactly was used. For my project I want to create busy backgrounds or somewhat confusing backgrounds that keep the viewer hooked on exactly what I am trying to convey.

The other thing that I took away from the graphic designers was the usage of color in their images, in which I want all my illustrations to have colors or even confusing colors that wouldn't seem to go well together. I want them to create some sort of urgence.

Another cool example, Robert Stace: Danger (Copyright © Robert Stace, 1976)
